1.7 – Medical Consultation & Examination

Wesleyan University will provide employees who work with hazardous chemicals an immediate opportunity to receive medical attention, whenever an employee:

  • is referred for medical follow up by Director of EHS.
  • develops signs or symptoms associated with excessive exposure to a hazardous chemical used in their laboratory;
  • is exposed routinely above the action level (or in the absence of an action level, the applicable OSHA work place exposure limit) for an OSHA regulated substance;
  • may have been exposed to a hazardous chemical during a chemical incident such as a spill, leak, explosion or fire; and
  • is referred for medical follow up by Director of EHS.

Individuals with life threatening emergencies should proceed immediately to the Middlesex Memorial Hospital emergency room. An ambulance can be obtained by dialing 911. All accidents resulting in injuries that require medical treatment (including first aid) should be reported immediately to the Director of EHS. Medical examinations/consultations (non-life threatening), including follow-up examinations for students, will be made by the medical staff at the Davison House Health Center (ext. 2470). Wesleyan medical personnel may refer patients elsewhere if the situation warrants. Medical exams and consultations shall be done by or under direct supervision of a licensed physician at no cost to the employee.

Where medical consultations or examinations are provided the examining physician shall be provided with the following information:

  • The identity of the hazardous chemical(s) to which the employee may have been exposed
  • The exposure conditions
  • Copies of the SDS sheets and any other toxicological or medical informationthat may be available
  • The signs and symptoms of exposure the laboratory employee is experiencing, if any
