1.11 — Protocol Safety Review

Under some circumstances a particular chemical substance and associated laboratory operation, procedure or activity may be considered sufficiently hazardous to require prior approval from the Director of EHS, before research begins. This approval process will ensure that safeguards are properly set up and that personnel are adequately trained in the procedure. The operations, procedures, and chemical substances listed below require approval before beginning work:

  • cyanogen chloride
  • diborane
  • dimethylmercury
  • dinitrogen tetroxide
  • fluorine
  • germanium tetrafluoride
  • hydrogen cyanide
  • hydrogen fluoride, anhydrous
  • hydrogen selenide
  • nickel carbonyl
  • nitric oxide
  • nitrogen trioxide
  • nitrosyl chloride (not including complexes of borane, such as borane-THF)
  • oxygen difluoride
  • phosphine
  • selenium hexafluoride
  • silane
  • sodium-potassium alloy
  • stibine
  • sulfur tetrafluoride
  • tellurium hexafluoride
